CABO Mission Statement

Capital Area Beading Organization (CABO) is a guild committed to perpetuating the art of beadwork by providing opportunities for education and skill development, and offering a forum for beaders of all skill levels to share knowledge and express creativity.

The Story of CABO

In November of 2002, CABO’s founding members sent emails asking local beaders about their beading needs and interests. We held our first meeting in January 2003 with about 45 people attending.  The vision for CABO was to gather a group of people interested in jewelry and beaded crafts; provide a place where information was exchanged; create a club that could find its place in the community and to make a difference to people, whether for expressing creativity, participating in opportunities, sharing common interests or making new friends. We are proud to say we have accomplished these goals.

Over these years, CABO has arranged demos in bead shops, held Meet and Bead gatherings outside of the regular meeting times. We’ve established relationships with nearly every bead shop in our area and promoted the club with literature and newsletters. We’ve supported our members at the Christmas Carousel Show at the fairgrounds set up CABO membership booths to promote and attract new members at Jane’s Fiber and beads shows; at the Woodcroft Women’s Organization in Durham, Cary’s Spring Days and at the NC Craft Guild Show. We sponsored a Craft Sale for members, giving an opportunity for new and intermediate beaders to sell their jewelry. We’ve hosted guests speaker who have discussed on topics such as color theory, the history of pearls, photographing your work, and their stories of African, Asian and American-Indian beaders.

Our advanced members have also led teaching projects and shared their beading tips and techniques.  We’ve made and contributed jewelry to Shelters for Battered and Abused Women: and donated money, beads and raw materials for the Hope Bracelet project, a global program to provide skills to disadvantaged African women.
